MeCh Savvy

Empowering Youth to pursue

Science. Technology. Engineering. Math.

WHAT WE DO

Crash Course Robotics Workshop

— Location

Events are held at our sponsor CIK Telecom’s Office (241 Whitehall Dr, Markham, ON LR3 5G5)

MeCh Savvy can also travel to a specific venue in the Greater Toronto Area if preferred. (Venue booking is not our responsibility. We have the right to decline a location if deemed unfit).

— Affordability

MeCh Savvy intends to be a one time introductory course to robotics. Unlike costly, long-term commitment programs that can cost up to $8000, MeCh Savvy charges $10 per student per 3 hour session.

MeCh Savvy is a non-profit; profits go towards purchasing snacks for the event and the rest is donated to 200 Lancebotics a local VEX robotics team.

— Age Range

Students aged 5-13 benefit most from this opportunity. Workshops can be divided into juniors and seniors if there is a significant skill gap.

This program can be altered depending on the relative skill assessment of the cohort.

— Lego Robotics

Lego Mindstorms allows novices to use Legos, a  programmable brick, motors, and sensors to make a robot walk, talk, grab, think, shoot and do almost anything you can imagine.

Robots can be controlled via the Lego EV3 App, a remote control, or solely an autonomous period.

— VEX Robotics

VEX Robotics fosters an environment where students in middle school, high school, and university can form teams to design, build, and program 18″ by 18″ robots to compete in regional, provincial, and international competitions with over 11400 teams worldwide.

Using aluminum, steel, lexan, gear ratios, and different build mechanisms students are well equipped with engineering principles.

— Programming

LEGO EV3 or NXT software (Drag and Drop Programming) is used to code the Lego Mindstorm Robots. Students use their logic to drag action blocks to create a series of tasks for their robot to perform.

RobotC is used to program the VEX Robots. RobotC is C-Based Programming  Language and mimics real-life IDEs used in computer science industries.

WHO WE ARE

We are Mary Guan, Crystal Jin, and Sabrina Wen from Leaside High School.  We are passionate and driven individuals who strive to create a safe, open, affordable, and fast-paced STEM/Robotics learning opportunity for youth.

Events

MeCh Savvy 1.0

MeCh Savvy’s pilot project launched January 5th 2019. With Tickets costing 10$ for a three hour session, we successfully had a cohort of 20 students. The juniors worked on building Lego Robots and raced their creations through an obstacle course.

The seniors had the opportunity to build a drive train, ball intake, and catapult using VEX parts. There was a short electrical reading workshop and a Q&A session led by Li Lian Lui a Civil engineer at Hatch.

MeCh Savvy 2.0 in partnership with CAGIS

MeCh Savvy was approached by the Canadian Institute for Girls in Science to run this event again. http://www.cagis.ca/ This time, we decided to run a free workshop because we understand the importance of including girls in the S.T.E.M field and introducing them at a young age before certain prejudices become engraved. With 20 young girls aged 8-14, we were able to spark interest and reinforce the idea that girls belong in S.T.E.M.
